Math Curriculum

SCCS Math Module Curriculum Initiative

In the 2012-13 school year, all Prek-8 teachers began implementing the Common Core Learning Standards.  The CCLS are internationally benchmarked and serve as a consistent set of expectations for what students should learn and be able to do.  Last year, the Emily Howland faculty explored several published math programs and agreed to adopt a consistent K-6 math program, the New York State Math Modules, for the 2013-14 school year.  The Modules were developed by New York State and align with the common core curriculum and the pedagogical shifts for mathematics as determined by the Common Core.

The K-6 Math Modules focus on a more in-depth understanding of mathematics by narrowing topics and spending additional time within the classroom practicing concepts.  Math fluency is gained as teachers connect learning to foundations built in previous years and teach core concepts not by memorization but by learning and understanding mathematic procedures.  Our expectation is to gain mastery in math by applying skills to real life situations while using a variety of resources available in the classroom.   The Math Modules will be launched in all K-6 classrooms at Southern Cayuga beginning in September.

If you would like to learn more about the new math modules, please view the K-6 math modules at:  http://www.engageny.org/mathematics .  An overview of the modules and specific grade level materials can be accessed through the menu on the left side of the page.  Access to the modules can be gained at the bottom right hand corner of each grade level page.
