Community Gleaning Project

Members of the Southern Cayuga FFA chapter partnered with Tureks Farm in King Ferry, New York for the first annual Community Gleaning Project.  Seventeen FFA members spent one afternoon picking zucchini and sweet corn from one of Tureks fields.  The produce that was picked was originally scheduled to go to King Ferry Food Pantry but due to the students’ efforts and hard work, we had more produce than the King Ferry Food Pantry could utilize before it spoiled.  The chapter was able to distribute the remaining produce to the Genoa and Union Springs Food Pantries respectively.  The Southern Cayuga FFA Chapter hopes to expand this gleaning project to include other local farms in the Southern Cayuga School District.  A huge thank you to Tureks’ employee Mike Emerson, for serving as the liaison and reserving the fields for this project.
