Budget Vote 2014-15

Southern Cayuga Central School District Budget Approved by Voters

On Tuesday, May 20, Southern Cayuga residents voted to approve the district's 2014-15 proposed budget, with 351 voting in favor and 112 voting against it. The $16.8 million budget carries a $481,057 spending increase over the current year and a 1.9 percent increase in the tax levy.

The tax levy increase is below the allowable limit set by New York’s tax levy limit law.

“We want to thank the members of our community who turned out at the polls and voted today,” said Superintendent Patrick Jensen. “Despite significant mandated cost increases, administrators and the Board of Education made a conscious effort to draft a budget that preserves academic programs in our schools.”
Voters also approved:

  • A $391,369 proposition to purchase three school buses and student transport van, with 324 voting in favor and 139 voting against it.
  • A capital project proposition to repair infrastructure and to gain energy efficiencies, with 327 votes in favor and 134 against.
  • A combined budget of $70,650 for Aurora Free Library and Hazard Library, with 316 votes in favor and 138 against.
Two candidates also were elected to the Southern Cayuga Board of Education. Voters elected Dean Winspear (347 votes) and David Harvatine (324 votes), each of whom will serve a three-year term, beginning July 1. Michael Lonsky received 156 votes.
