2017-2018 SCCS Budget Approved by Voters
First of all, thank you to the SCCS community for approving our 2017-18 school budget. The budget vote shows a strong commitment on the part of our community for our schools’ academic programming and to properly maintain and upgrade the facilities at Southern Cayuga.
The 2017-2018 SCCS budget passed as a result of Tuesday’s district voting by a margin of 413-92, with 81% in favor. Voters also approved the continuation of the district bus replacement plan and a $1.25 million capital project to replace the roof on the elementary wing on our central campus. We are in the final planning stages for the capital improvement project and anticipate the roof replacement being completed in the summer of 2018. The full cost of the project will be borne by state building aid and the utilization of the capital reserve.
The district budget strikes a balance between short-term needs and long-term fiscal planning. A primary goal of the Board of Education has been to minimize year-to-year fluctuations within the budget and to remain well below the 2% tax cap. The approved budget calls for a half (.5) percent increase which is the lowest tax increase in more than 25 years.
The school board election, also held on Tuesday, saw Mike Huber of Scipio and Christine Brozon of Aurora elected to the Southern Cayuga Board of Education. Their three-year terms will commence on July 1, 2017.
