Emily Howland Staff Assignments
Interim Principal: Dr. Michael Simons
March 24, 2021
Dear Emily Howland Community,
It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the interim principal of Emily Howland Elementary School. When Superintendent Jensen approached me about the opportunity to lead the school for the remainder of this school year and spoke to me of the outstanding students, families, and staff, I happily and humbly accepted the offer. I want to thank you in advance for your generosity in welcoming me.
In my career in public education, I have worked as a teacher at several elementary grade levels, as a principal for almost a decade, and as a central office administrator. I have an undergraduate degree from Hartwick College and graduate degrees from Syracuse, Cortland, and Cornell. I love the process of learning, and nothing is more satisfying for me than watching “lightbulbs” go on when others are learning.
I live in Ithaca with my wife who is a reading teacher, two of my hockey playing children, a hypoallergenic Havanese dog named Nyxi, and a grumpy 30+-year-old tortoise named Buddy. My oldest child is in his second year of college.
For over a year we all have had extreme challenges thrust upon us. From my initial observations, the Southern Cayuga School District has done an excellent job of balancing the safety of the school community with the importance of maintaining learning routines. My goals are to ensure that communication is clear and timely, that the remainder of the school year ends safely and productively, and that the transition planning for the next school year is smooth as we move into the next phase of reopening.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns you have – none are too small. I am genuinely looking forward to meeting everyone during these remaining months of the school year!
