Superintendent Summer Update

The conclusion of the 2023-2024 school year at Southern Cayuga signifies a notable transition for our district. With the conclusion of federal COVID-19 funding this summer, we are reverting to pre-pandemic staffing levels, resulting in an overall reduction of ten positions. This adjustment presents us with the challenge of achieving our goals with fewer resources. Over the past three years, the additional federal funding has been instrumental in supporting our efforts to mitigate learning loss due to pandemic-related closures.

As part of our fiscal realignment, Southern Cayuga will undergo a restructuring of our administrative team, reducing the number of building administrators from three to two positions. Luke Carnicelli will continue to lead as principal at the high school, while Caitlin Wasielewski assumes the role of elementary principal for the upcoming 2024-25 school year. Please join us in welcoming Caitlin into her new position at Emily Howland Elementary School.

Colton Gregg will assume responsibility for coordinating athletic programming beginning this summer, alongside his continued role as a math teacher. Colton's extensive coaching experience will significantly benefit our student athletes and athletic programs.

On July 1, 2024, the SCCS Board of Education welcomed new board member Robb Jetty. Rachel McCarthy has been elected as the SCCS Board of Education President, with Tim Pallokat elected as the SCCS BOE Vice-President. The summer meeting dates for the Board of Education are scheduled for August 12th and August 26th at 5 pm (summer hours) in the high school library.

The 2023 Approved Capital Improvement Project is set to commence shortly, with the district anticipating NYSED’s approval for roof reconstruction in the coming weeks. Through a state bid process, the district has successfully reduced costs, minimized waste, and secured a roofing contractor ready to begin work this summer. RSA Architects and C&S Construction Management will oversee the capital project throughout this summer and the next year.

Take Care,
